L2 Writing in a Machine Translation-based Korean Writing Class -Learner Perceptions and Characteristics of Translated Texts

This study examined how Korean learners perceive machine translation in writing class, what the characteristics of machine-translated texts are, and patterns appear depending on level proficiency. Based these results, this aimed to suggest class would help both instructors students. According a survey 77 learners, 96% use about 90% find it convenient. For beginners, most used when translating their native language into Korean, while intermediate advanced language. Machine was mainly for learning written In second same population, more than 98% recognized that convenient but inaccurate, 97% required there be activities which could also provide feedback during time. sum, reviewed modified results carefully beginners less learners. Thus based study, teaching methods using were presented as ‘1) finding problems correcting one’s own knowledge through self-correction after translation, 2) discovering differences between mother tongue back-translation activities, 3) ways reduce errors, where 4) instructor should guide discover cultural elements explicit feedback., various translations according purpose intention cooperative activities.’
